Keep Your Basement Safe From Water Damage

flood damage repair logan, flood damage cleanup logan, flood damage loganBasements are the most common places in the home that flood. Because they are below ground level, basements are prone to flooding from weather-related causes. Burst pipes and leaking water heaters are also common causes of basement flooding, but outside floodwaters enter and flood basements in entirely different ways than pipes and appliances. The team at Sierra Restoration wants you to know that there are steps you can take to prevent basement flooding from outside water intrusion.

Tips To Prevent Basement Flooding

  1. If your basement is not sealed properly, water will be able to leak inside. Over time, the sealant can begin to deteriorate, allowing water to seep into the basement from the ground. If you notice water coming into your home when it rains, it is probably due to poor basement sealing. You should check your basement walls for signs of water damage, such as bubbling, peeling, cracking, and warping. If you notice any of these signs, you may want to have your basement checked.

  2. As the foundation of your home settles, and over time, it becomes prone to cracking. Cracks in the foundation equal water leaks. Vertical and diagonal foundation cracks are typically a result of settling in the concrete foundation and are frequently found in block foundations. Horizontal foundation cracks are often indicators of a more serious problem. These types of cracks are commonly caused by water pressure outside of the walls. Cracks smaller than 1/8 inch can be filled with a sealant, but anything larger needs to be addressed by a professional. Do not leave cracks in your foundation untreated, or you risk your basement flooding.

  3. Clogged rain gutters, while seemingly harmless, can lead to water damage in your basement. Gutters are essential to moving water away from your home to keep your basement dry. When leaves, dirt, sticks, and other debris build up in the gutters, they can cause clogs. These clogs will cause water to overflow, run down the side of your home, and pool around the foundation. If the ground around your home gets too saturated, that water will seep into the basement. Check your gutters regularly, once in the fall and again in the spring, to keep them clean and clear.

  4. If the downspouts from your gutters are not installed correctly, they can cause some serious flooding in your basement. The purpose of the downspout is to direct water away from the home, especially the foundation. Downspouts need to direct water at least 5 feet away from the home, and toward an area where it will not run back to the home. If your downspouts are not long enough, not installed correctly, broken, or damaged, all the water draining from your roof will end up pooling around your foundation. Again, too much water around the foundation of your home could result in a flooded basement.

  5. Sump pumps are installed in basements to remove excess water near and around your home. They are great tools are preventing basements from flooding, but when they fail, it could mean serious water damage. Having a backup sump pump, battery-operated or powered by a generator, will provide extra security if your sump pump fails.
